Running a business is tough. One of the most significant challenges that you have as a business owner is human resources. Having an engaged, motivated, and active staff isn’t something that every business owner encounters. Making the right decisions in regards to your employees can pay big dividends in the future. One of the tough decisions that many business owners faced is whether they should give their employees the day national holidays off. Should you give your employees the day off on national holidays?

Paying Respect

One of the main reasons that you may want to give your employees ¬†holidays is that it shows respect to the military and those who served in the past. Veterans sacrifice everything so that the citizens of the United States can live free. There are current heroes protecting the liberties past veterans have established today. Even if you don’t have any veterans on staff, many feel the need to show their appreciation and respect on holidays such as Memorial or Veterans Day. By letting them have work off, you’ll show that you understand and support American values. You and your company will show respect to those who make sacrifices so you can conduct business in a free country.

Lost Production vs. Better Production

When making this decision, you may be struggling to give up an entire day’s worth of production from your employees. Regardless of what business you’re in, you undoubtedly have a lot of things that need to get done. It most likely feels like you’re up against the clock with the limited amount of work days in a month. You’ve got bills to pay and every working hour needs to be utilized to maximize production. Because of this, you may be feeling like it’s necessary to make your employees work on holidays to get every ounce of production out of your workforce. However, this may not be as effective as you had hoped. The downside of this approach is that it will likely lead to lower quality overall than if you had just taken the day off. Employees may be resentful that everyone else ¬†is getting the holiday off while they have to work. This resentment or exhaustion from constant work could prompt less than optimal effort.
